The Best ESC Songs Ever

Today I met an Eurovison Song Contest fan after a quiz in my local.  Discussion was what were the best (two) ESC winner songs ever. What an intriguing guestion. ESC has been around Europe since 1956 and you could imagine there has been made songs which are true lassics today. Or are there? Yes, Ì surely believe there are.

My friend announced two favourite songs to the top: Nicky Leandros' Apres Tòis and Johnny Logan's Hold Me Now.  Both are the songs which have made an impact to me but I would select other ones

For me they are:
  • Brotherhood of Man: Kisses for me. This is one of the first winners of ESC after Abba I remember and it makes me happy every time. Who wouldn't be like kissed! And this song has a happy attaching tune.
  • Dansevise: Grethe & Jørgen Ingmann. Because of the personal Danish Connection
Runner ups are Jacqueline Boyer's Tom Bilibi, Logan's Hold Me Now and Helena Paparizou's My Number One. The last one because of the personal attachment to Sweden and Greece. And Helena is fantastic. The live show in Stockholm was special one!

There are many other songs as well which have a special memories attached to theml, but here were the first one got in to my mind today.  What were yours? Take the poll on the right side bar of this blog.

Slavery was abolished in USA in 1865, in Finland it was done in the 1950's

In 2010 Finland's National Brand Committee lead by former Nokia CEO Jorma Ollila presented its paper to a former Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb. The committee stated proudly that Finland was the forerunner of democracy since Finnish women became the first in the world to have unrestricted rights both to vote and to stand for parliament. But something was left out from the report. Something which was part of the Finnish Social Policy in many decades of the 20th Century. In many countries this would be called slavery. And this is something which is quieted story of the Finnish history. A modern time slavery. Finnish historician Jouko Halmekoski writes about the modern slave market which was the fact in Finland as late as in the 1950's. He interviewed 25 persons who had been auctioned away by the local government in order to save money in sustaining the children. The lowest bidders won the custody of the child for one years period. Martin helmet: Sotalaistenmäki

Martti on kaupunginosa, jossa eri aikakausien kerrostumat ja useat eri asumismuodot ovat edustettuina. Yksi mielialueistani kotikaupunginosassani on Sotalaistenmäki. Paikannimi ei ehkä kerro mitään suurimmalle osalle turkulaisistakaan, mutta jos kerron, että mäen lakea hallitsee upea klassismia edustava Martinkirkko , osaavat kaikki sijoittaa paikan kartalle. Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskuksen Turku - keskiajan kaupunki (kaupunkinimistön historiaa) mukaan paikan erikoinen nimi juontaa Kaarinan Sotalaisten kylään. Kylän rajat ulottuivat aikanaan Aurajokeen saakka. Martinkirkon ympäristössä tästä muistuttavat paikannimet Sotalaistenmäki , Sotalaistenaukio ja Sotalaistenkatu . Kadunnimi (Såtalaisgatan) esiintyy jo vuoden 1837 asemakaavakartassa. Martinkirkon ympäristö kuuluu Museoviraston valtakunnallisesti merkittävien rakennettujen kulttuuriympäristöjen listaan. Gunnar Wahlroosin * ja Totti Soran piirtämä kirkko edustaa tyylisuunnaltaan uusasiallista klassismia. Kyse...

Martti is State of Mind

Asun Martin kaupunginosassa Turussa. Tänään puutaloalueella kävellessäni ajattelin [jälleen kerran], että tämä on hieno paikka. Oli lottovoitto, että päädyimme paluumuuttajina Norjasta tähän kaupunginosaan. Täällä on tekemisen meininki. Kaupunki lakkautti Martin sivukirjaston vuonna 2009. Sen sijaan, että marttilaiset olisivat käpristyneet kuoreensa ja surkutelleet kohtaloaan, kaupunginosa-aktiivit perustivat Kulttuuriolohuone Martin . Kaupunginosalaisten omasta kirjastosta löytyy tänä päivänä lainattavaksi noin 17.000 nidettä. Lisäksi olohuoneessa järjestetään paljon mielenkiintoista toimintaa, taidenäyttelyitä, runoiltoja, keikkoja ja paljon muuta. Martin sydän, ainakin itselleni, on vuonna 1974 perustettu Pippurimylly ja ennenkaikkea sen myöhäisempi laajennusosa, kortteliravintola Hugo  (1993 alkaen). Toisinkuin eräs keskustassa oleva tunnettu pitseria sitkeästi väittää, Turun ensimmäinen pizza tarjottiin Pippurimyllyn avajaispäivänä 18.7.1972.
