Jolla - a Phone which had the world ahead of it ... but

I was among the first ones who preordered Jolla phone on May 13. Finally, couple of days before Christmas, the phone arrived. The company promised to deliver the phone to the early birds before it was going to hit the markets. But what happened. Product packgage Fail #1 - forgetting the early adapters The company forgot it's first backers. Part of the early adopters, pioneers, who had eagerly waited the phone got it LATER than the phone arrived to the DNA's (Finnish mobile phone operator) shops. Fail which sounds not a big deal but is bigger than it's size. Never dissappoint your fans. They are the ones who write the early blog entries on the user behaviour and since they are the early ones they are perhaps more eager to forgive the early bugs. But if you do not get what is promised. You start to use your device with more critical view. I was the one who received the phone late. I was pissed off the fact that I had paid in advance a certain amount of the device...

Resurrection of the Phone Kiosk

I recently moved to work in the landscape office space in my working location in Turku. Humak University of Applied Sciences ' RDI-Centre (Meri) moved recently to Logomo Byrå - centre for creative industries in Turku, Finland and the solution was open office where we all shared an open and spaceous premises. For me, who comes from a family with seven kids, working in such a location is not problematic at all, but once and a while there is a situation where you would prefer a quiet chat in a phone because of the background noice - or because you want to let others to work undisturbly. Finnish Framery developed a solution for landscape offices I happened to be around when Vesa-Matti Marjamäki and Samu Hällfors from a small design company Framery came to install a phone booth designed for landscapes to our premises. It is worth to mention that these start-uppers live with the enterpreneurship spirit. They are not just installers but they also company managers. Sometimes you d...

Angry Aps I: Parkman

This is not about the  great success of the Finnish Gaming Industry There has been lot of talk in media about Finnish ICT industry after the great success Rovio and Supercell have made with their Angry Birds and Clash of Clans games. But since there has been so much fuzz about the Finnish gaming companies, I want to focus in to other great Finnish ICT services with promising potential. These I will bring up in my new "Angry Aps" -series. Criteria to the selection of the services is that these applications or services have somehow helped me in my everyday life - in a way or another. Parkman - a parking meter on your mobile phone The first application in this series is Parkman, formerly known as Parkkinappi. I downloaded Parkman to my mobile phone around a month ago and I cannot understand I had not done that earlier. Parkman is a parking meter in your pocket. The application makes the everyday city parking so much easier. How often you have parked to the spot and re...

When Nokia Lost its Vision

When I in year 2007 visited both Samsung's and LG's research centres in South Korea, it was easy to see who would be the winners of the era of media convergence . Already then we could see concepts where mobile phone, TV, personal computer and all other home electronics were borrowing features from each others. In addition they would perform tasks together. Our group entering to LG Tower in April 2007. Today we are living in that period where portable devices resemble more and more full blood home entertainment systems, TV's opens up to the internet and offers telecommunication services, washing machines are measuring dirtyness of the clothes and suggest you the right washing program, a fridge will check your shopping list against the items existing in the fridge and removing the ones from the list which you already have in fridge - and so on. And new services are just around the corner. Winners of this competition will be the big Korean manufactures who did not amput...
