"Veikkausliigaa" vuodelta 1955

TPS rikkoi 1960-luvun alussa ensimmäisenä joukkueena yli 50.000 katsojan rajan kotiotteluissaan. 60-luvun katsojakeskiarvot olivat yli 3000, kun viime vuona yllettiin hieman yli kahdentuhannen (2...

Ateneum Art Museum in Google Art Project

Google Art Project's ambition is to collect the best of the national treasures around the world and bring them alive to everyone in the world. Now, when pages opened in the internet we can congratulate our ancestors when they named our National Gallery as Ateneum. It's a bit odd name for the Finnish ar...

Grandpa in Wallmart, 87 year old Rose in a College and Kittens in Bottles

Remember the Grandpa who was tired of following his wife to the shopping at Wallmart and got banned from the supermarket because he - among other things - placed condoms in other people's carts and made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom. * Image often attached to the Wall Mart hoax. A documentary photo kind of makes the story more valid? Or perhaps you remember the story of a 87 year old Rose who fulfilled her dream to study in college - and died just one week after graduation? ** Photo of a 87 year old college student Rose is actually a photo of  Nola Ochsin who in 2007 got in to the Guinness Book of  Records as the olders college graduate (95) ever Or a farmer who made gigantic table and chairs to his horses when he was denied construction permit by the local government? *** These furniture are not constructed by an angry farmer. Anatomy of an hoax All these are good examples of the stories which have been circul...

HS:n hidas journalismi tarjoaa hitaan lukukokemuksen lukijalle.

Tässä esimerkkikappale kopioituna HS:n hitaan journalismin artikkelista: Ymma¨rta¨a¨kseni uskontoa viela¨ paremmin, ajattelin ela¨a¨ lukuprosessin ajan ta¨rkeimpien Koraanin anta mien ohjeiden mukaan. [ ] Varsin hankalaa kielessä, jossa ääkköset ovat olennainen osa kommunikaatiota. Mutta kerta se on ensimmäinenkin. Onnea seuraavaan kertaan. Harvoinhan sitä bloggaajalle tulee mahdollisuus nipistää valtamediaa ;o) HS kuukausiliite tänään 2.2.2013 HS:n painettu kuukausiliite 2.2.2013 HS:n verkkopalvelu, jossa h...

Adieu, Sonera.

Viimeiset testaukset ennen irtisanomispuheluani: Sonera kiinteä laajakaista 24 Mbit...

Linnanjuhlat twiitattiin maailmanlaajuiseksi trendiksi

The Amazing Statistics of the Internet

Last weekend I was searching some statistical data for my lecture on social media. I popped in to many so interesting sites and news stories about the internet that I got an inspiration to create my second Infograph ever. The major sources I used were AllTwitter, AllFacebook, Wikipedia, Techcrunch & The Huffington Post which I judge to be relatively trustworthy sources in the subject matter. The figures mirror the status in the internet in December 2012. This is what happens in internet. In every minute. If you wish to use the image in your presentation you might find the high resolution image of it helpful. You'll find it in my Flickr-account . If you want to have this also in Finnish, just leave a commentary below. It does not take much time since all the bits and pieces are in place.

The Truth Behind Giant Furnitures and Horses?

Table and Chair shelter for horses was a troll. Yesterday I asked my students whether they had seen the fake Facebook postings of "Facebook copyright disclaimer" and "lottery winner giving 1 million $ away for a random liker" . Everyone had seen these and many had seen those distributed by their friends. Many had been trolling. There has been three big trolls out there within just a week. Generating millions of repostings and thousands of blog postings. Most of them believing the fake story behind them. The third one was the posting of horses sheltering under a giant table and chairs claiming that horse owner built them because he was denied the building permission to build a traditional horse shelter by a city council. Sorry to say but the posting was untrue. The photograph is real, these chairs and tables do exist, but they were originally built by a German furniture manufacturer in order to advertise their products. The photo was first published by TIM...

Click here and find out what pissed me off

Answer is: Titles written in that way. Titles which do not give an answer in itself but temp people to click them further in a story. When I taught journalism one of the most important rules was to load the most important information in to the title and the first lines of the story. However they had to be written in a way which tempted people to read more. In a era of the internet many of the mass media is living in "The Economy of the Clicks". This means that in order to find out what is the answer to the "question" raised in a title, you have to click further in to the story. When people share articles to Facebook or Twitter, you do not see the informatio in a shared "infobox" but have to click further. Don't waste my time. I do not click that kind of stories. Never.Time is my most valuable asset and it irritates me when someone is wasting it. I want my information here, now and fast - not after clicking. Are journalist nowdays just click pimp...

When Society's Safety Net Falls: Human Barbie

I have an application bar in my browser which alerts of the hottest searches in the web right now. Today, alongside, with the normal "thanksgiving recipies" there was something which caught my attention. "Human Barbie" are one of the hottest worlds in the internet right now. It prooved to be an Ukrainian curiosity, a young woman, whose dream is to resemble the plastic barbie-doll instead of a real human being. So she has taken cosmetic manipulation of her body over the extreme end. Photos made me sick. It is more and more disturbing to see what people can do in order to get their 15 minutes in media.    Reality shows, blogs, magazines are filling up with the people who want to have their part in a fake publicity . Once and a while you start to wonder, were there a whole in the society's safety net when these people slipped thought it. They do not deserve publicity but care and therapy. It is obvious that Valerie Lukyanova, The Human Barbie, does not ha...
