Christmas Day in London (Xmas in London V)


Don't expect anything fancy in London on a Christmas day. More or less everything is closed. Underground and bus lines are all cancelled.
All underground lines and bus lines are closed. Also few taxis were driven.
We didn't and therefore a larger apartment proved to be the best solution for holidays. Since only handful of the places are open and these are hard to find, you set price to the 1st class cooking facilities.

After the lazy morning we headed to a walk around over the nearby Tower Bridge and back over the London Bridge. A decent walk and gorgeous site. Many people walking, mostly tourists.

By the Queens Walk (south bank of Thames between the Tower Bridge and London Bridge) we found a waterhole which was open. Only couple pubs are open this day, so we went in. So, if you are a tourist in a Xmas day in London wanting decent food and drinks, head here. We noticed other spots open here as well.

Hornimans at Hays is a big pub by the river. Two I.P.A.s and a coke for £10.65. Food, which we did not take this time, seemed to be good. Also many locals having a Xmas lunch which is always a good sign.
Hornimans at Hays is situated just after the City Hall towards the London Bridge.

If you are on architecture, the new City Hall is definetly worth visiting.

In London there is just The Real Ale. No lager to me, please

My choice for the Christmas Ale was Jaipur I.P.A. which is stronger than ale usually, 5.9%. Very tasty & rich with Kentish hops.

Every seat were taken.

Accessibility thought in a toilet. And that smell of naphthalene - the same as in my local, Hugo, in Turku.

Slavery was abolished in USA in 1865, in Finland it was done in the 1950's

In 2010 Finland's National Brand Committee lead by former Nokia CEO Jorma Ollila presented its paper to a former Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb. The committee stated proudly that Finland was the forerunner of democracy since Finnish women became the first in the world to have unrestricted rights both to vote and to stand for parliament. But something was left out from the report. Something which was part of the Finnish Social Policy in many decades of the 20th Century. In many countries this would be called slavery. Finnish historician Jouko Halmekoski writes about the modern slave market which was the fact in Finland as late as in the 1950's. Kasvien keruu ja herbaario - prässäämisohjeet

1970-luvun peruskoulu-uudistus unohti kasvion! Kuulun siihen peruskoulusukupolveen, jonka ei tarvinnut kerätä kesälomansa aikana herbaariota eli kasvikokoelmaa. Se oli sääli, sillä pläräsin useasti veljeni keräämää upeaa 50 kasvin kokoelmaa. Selasin usein sen sivuja ihastellen kauniisti kuivattuja ja prässättyjä kasveja. Olisin halunnut koota sellaisen itsekin. Se jäi, kunnes vihdoin tänä kesänä pääsin kannustamaan poikaani hänen kasvinkeruuretkillään. Sain seuratakin häntä ja hänen serkkujaan metsien siimekseen ja peltojen pientareille. Hienointa oli, että hänen opettajansa jopa kannusti vanhempia ja isovanhempia sekä lapsia liikkumaan yhdessä luonnosta nauttien - kunhan lapsi valitsisi poimittavat kasvit. Matka aurinkoisella soratiellä kohti luontoa ja kerättäviä kasveja. Kasvienprässääminen palasi takaisin Jossain vaiheessa kasvien kerääminen palasi peruskoulun opetussuunnitelmaan. Martin helmet: Sotalaistenmäki

Martti on kaupunginosa, jossa eri aikakausien kerrostumat ja useat eri asumismuodot ovat edustettuina. Yksi mielialueistani kotikaupunginosassani on Sotalaistenmäki. Paikannimi ei ehkä kerro mitään suurimmalle osalle turkulaisistakaan, mutta jos kerron, että mäen lakea hallitsee upea klassismia edustava Martinkirkko , osaavat kaikki sijoittaa paikan kartalle. Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskuksen Turku - keskiajan kaupunki (kaupunkinimistön historiaa) mukaan paikan erikoinen nimi juontaa Kaarinan Sotalaisten kylään. Kylän rajat ulottuivat aikanaan Aurajokeen saakka. Martinkirkon ympäristössä tästä muistuttavat paikannimet Sotalaistenmäki , Sotalaistenaukio ja Sotalaistenkatu . Kadunnimi (Såtalaisgatan) esiintyy jo vuoden 1837 asemakaavakartassa. Martinkirkon ympäristö kuuluu Museoviraston valtakunnallisesti merkittävien rakennettujen kulttuuriympäristöjen listaan. Gunnar Wahlroosin * ja Totti Soran piirtämä kirkko edustaa tyylisuunnaltaan uusasiallista klassismia. Kyse...
