Yesterday evening I published a photo from my local pub in Facebook. It was a photo from a sign announcing a new drink called StarWars (Tähtien Sota in Finnish) made up by Hugo's bartender.
Jallu, a.k.a Jaloviina is Finland's Jack Daniels. Known as a drink for rockers, poets and bohemians. A real classic.
Jaloviina won Finnish hearts in 1932 when the Prohibition was abolished in Finland after 13 years in practice. Jaloviina (noble spirits, free translation) is cognac blended with grain spirit. Blending ratio is expressed with the stars. One star Jaloviina's blending ratio is 1/4 of cognac, two stars' (came back to the market this year due to 80th Anniversary) 1/2 of cognac.
So, the loving relationship and the cultural roots of the plausible succesful image sharing were existing. I published the photo in my Facebook account yesterday around 8 PM. Now, 19 hours later it has become viral. Through my account it has 550 shares, and when some people adopted my photo to sites where people share & like humouristic photos, it has become totally wild: 23281 actual image views with 158 likes and through another site 6 862 views.
I've been teaching copyright issues, communication and social media for a while. One of the questions I have asked from my students has been whether they felt that their copyright has been infringed or would they feel honoured if their photo was used in internet without permission and it would spread like an avalanche? Most of the people said that they would feel infringed.
Sure, this would be case in the era of the traditional world of copyright legislation. For a professional photographer that would definetly even be the case of earning his/her living. But for a person who spends lot of his time in studying, researching and learning the world of digital & social media this is one of the most gratifying and wonderful thing which can happen. When your creation becomes viral, you have a winner's feeling.
But the real winner of this story is the bartender of Hugo who wrote the words to the chalkboard. It is his wittiness which is spreading, I just documented it. I can't wait to bring up the news for him.
And the photo? Here it is:
