Do You Read Small Print? Evernote's Giant Leap for EEA Users.

On 17th November (2012) Evernote sent an important note for its users. Surprisingly I have not seen many commentaries for this dramatic announcement.

Evernote is a digital storage for your memories - photos, receipts, notes, documents - storaged in to the cloud, accessible from any device. Wonderful service answering to real user need.

 Evernote's announcement is the first big move from the major American digital service provider in realisation that they are a global company. Working under "US [Californian] legislation" can be an real obstacle when seeking growth potential from the enterprise customer sector.


Major changes Evernote is doing:
  • Less legal jargon making small print readable and understandable for the users
  • Establishing Evernote GmbH in Switzerland. For "users in the European Economic Area, this means that Evernote GmbH is the data controller for data protection purposes.
  • Arbitration of the disputes on individual basis between the user and the company by mutually accepted arbitration administrator. This protects the company against expensive class actions and protecting single users for filing expensive lawsuits. Company even will pay arbitration costs for the minor disputes.
This is really big news and as a users from EU/ETA countries it takes away much concerns on your data privacy, protection and your rights as a consumer/user. I wonder whether services like Facebook, Dropbox and Flickr would do the same. They also storage our data, but what happens if they mess that up?

Slavery was abolished in USA in 1865, in Finland it was done in the 1950's

In 2010 Finland's National Brand Committee lead by former Nokia CEO Jorma Ollila presented its paper to a former Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb. The committee stated proudly that Finland was the forerunner of democracy since Finnish women became the first in the world to have unrestricted rights both to vote and to stand for parliament. But something was left out from the report. Something which was part of the Finnish Social Policy in many decades of the 20th Century. In many countries this would be called slavery. And this is something which is quieted story of the Finnish history. A modern time slavery. Finnish historician Jouko Halmekoski writes about the modern slave market which was the fact in Finland as late as in the 1950's. He interviewed 25 persons who had been auctioned away by the local government in order to save money in sustaining the children. The lowest bidders won the custody of the child for one years period. Kasvien keruu ja herbaario - prässäämisohjeet

1970-luvun peruskoulu-uudistus unohti kasvion! Kuulun siihen peruskoulusukupolveen, jonka ei tarvinnut kerätä kesälomansa aikana herbaariota eli kasvikokoelmaa. Se oli sääli, sillä pläräsin useasti veljeni keräämää upeaa 50 kasvin kokoelmaa. Selasin usein sen sivuja ihastellen kauniisti kuivattuja ja prässättyjä kasveja. Olisin halunnut koota sellaisen itsekin. Se jäi, kunnes vihdoin tänä kesänä pääsin kannustamaan poikaani hänen kasvinkeruuretkillään. Sain seuratakin häntä ja hänen serkkujaan metsien siimekseen ja peltojen pientareille. Hienointa oli, että hänen opettajansa jopa kannusti vanhempia ja isovanhempia sekä lapsia liikkumaan yhdessä luonnosta nauttien - kunhan lapsi valitsisi poimittavat kasvit. Matka aurinkoisella soratiellä kohti luontoa ja kerättäviä kasveja. Kasvienprässääminen palasi takaisin Jossain vaiheessa kasvien kerääminen palasi peruskoulun opetussuunnitelmaan. Martin helmet: Sotalaistenmäki

Martti on kaupunginosa, jossa eri aikakausien kerrostumat ja useat eri asumismuodot ovat edustettuina. Yksi mielialueistani kotikaupunginosassani on Sotalaistenmäki. Paikannimi ei ehkä kerro mitään suurimmalle osalle turkulaisistakaan, mutta jos kerron, että mäen lakea hallitsee upea klassismia edustava Martinkirkko , osaavat kaikki sijoittaa paikan kartalle. Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskuksen Turku - keskiajan kaupunki (kaupunkinimistön historiaa) mukaan paikan erikoinen nimi juontaa Kaarinan Sotalaisten kylään. Kylän rajat ulottuivat aikanaan Aurajokeen saakka. Martinkirkon ympäristössä tästä muistuttavat paikannimet Sotalaistenmäki , Sotalaistenaukio ja Sotalaistenkatu . Kadunnimi (Såtalaisgatan) esiintyy jo vuoden 1837 asemakaavakartassa. Martinkirkon ympäristö kuuluu Museoviraston valtakunnallisesti merkittävien rakennettujen kulttuuriympäristöjen listaan. Gunnar Wahlroosin * ja Totti Soran piirtämä kirkko edustaa tyylisuunnaltaan uusasiallista klassismia. Kyse...
